The guide is the first ever to rate UK restaurants solely on the merits on their wine list and evaluates quality, value and overall impression. Designed to take the stress out of selecting wines when hosting a meal, the guide commended the Crown on their extensive and carefully considered list whose easy reading descriptions make the task of selecting a wine an easy and pleasurable experience.

In compiling the Top 100, editor Neville Blech put the submitted wine lists under the microscope. Wine quality across the lists was determined from the star rating system in Wine behind the label 2006, an annual global guide to quality wine producers, from the same Williamson Moore Publishing stable, now in its fourth year of publication. Philip Williamson and David Moore, its authors have helped to edit the Top 100 and each entry contains a personal recommendation from them, as well as Neville. In his assessments, Blech utilises his expertise in matching fine wine and food, plus his skill in compiling wine lists.
